China: Roussillon Wines’ First Export Market in Value and Volume

Attention all Roussillon Wines lovers in China: China is Roussillon’s first export market in value and in volume!

For dry wines and VDN from Roussillon, China is the largest export market (1.4 million bottles for 3.9 million euros), followed by Germany (1 million bottles for 3.3 million euros), Belgium (1 million bottles for 2.3 million euros) and the USA (0.8 million bottles for 3.4 million euros).

In value in 2017, China led the world’s export markets for Roussillon dry wines with 3.9 million euros (17% of total exports), the USA in second for 3.4 million euros (15%), Germany in 3rdfor 3.3 million euros (15%), Canada in forth for 2.7 million euros (12%) and Belgium in fifth for 2.3 million euros (10%).

From 2012 to 2017, Roussillon wines exports towards China in value and in volume has seen exponential growth, a phenomena which c an also be observed in China’s market share in total wine exports from Roussillon. China’s import volumes of Roussillon wines grew from 4786 hl in 2012 to 10 861 in 2017 (the total volume was multiplied by 2.3 in 5 years) and from 1.5 million euros in 2012 to 4.2 million euros in 2017 (the total value was multiplied by 3 in 5 years). During this time, the share of the Chinese market in volume grew by 11 points from 9% in 2012 to 20% in 2017 and by 8 points in value from 8% in 2012 to 16% in 2017.

The numbers prove it for themselves, the friendship between Roussillon and China has only observed growth in the past 5 years and the Chinese market has become more and more important and strategic for Roussillon Wines. We are sure that these trends will only continue to grow in the next few years.
