10th edition of Grenaches du Monde

On May 5 and 6, the 10th edition of Grenaches du Monde was held in Navarre (Spain). Nearly 900 wines were tasted by a panel of international experts from more than 12 different nationalities. This competition covers the great terroirs of grenache since 2013: Roussillon, Navarre, Catalonia, Aragon, Sardinia, Languedoc, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Italian Marches, etc. and aims to bring together the great terroirs of grenache in all colors and typologies of wine…

______

In 2013, the Interprofessional Council of Roussillon Wines organised the first competition for this high-quality grape variety. With its roots in Roussillon, Grenaches du Monde has since became itinerant, each year hosted by regions producing wines based on the Grenache grape variety. Over the years, the event has become the unmissable annual meeting for professionals in the wine industry worldwide. Each year, rising numbers of wine producers have been participating in this event. More than 900 samples from France, Spain, Italy, South Africa, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Macedonia, Lebanon and Greece amongst other countries are expected to be entered in the next event.

Breaking news: the next edition of the competition will take place in New York in the United States.

The main objectives of this Grenaches du Monde competition are to :

  • encourage the promotion of premium-quality wines made from all different varieties of the Grenache grape
  • boost the production of Grenache and encourage its consumption on an international scale
  • showcase and promote the characteristics of the wines to members of the public worldwide
  • help the consumer to identify the best Grenache wines based on worldwide production through a quality seal, one of the selection criteria guaranteeing trustworthiness in the face of an increasingly complex production process.

The Grenaches du Monde celebrated their 10th anniversary in Navarre!
The Navarrese appellation has been chosen to host the 10th edition of the Grenaches du Monde competition, an international contest dedicated to this grape variety and its preferred terroirs.

Around a hundred national and international wine professionals (importers, distributors, journalists, and sommeliers, among others) met in the Navarrese town of Olite from 4 to 6 May to taste some 900 Grenache wines and select the best ones. The choice of Olite as the venue for the competition reaffirms the Navarre appellation’s commitment to the Grenache grape, the region’s emblematic variety, which produces excellent red, rosé, and white wines.

A multitude of climates and landscapes. One of the main characteristics that define the DOP Navarra isthe great diversity of landscapes and climates in the more than 100 kilometres that separate the north of the region, located near Pamplona, from the south, on the banks of the Ebro river.

Navarre enjoys an exceptional situation, practically unique in the Iberian Peninsula: the confluence of Atlantic, continental and Mediterranean climates. The proximity of the Bay of Biscay, the influence of the Pyrenees and the favourable conditions of the Ebro valley allow for this climatic diversity. This is a circumstance that profoundly characterises the landscape of Navarre, where the more than 10,200 hectares of the Denomination of Origin are located in a multitude of ecosystems and growing conditions (hillsides, riverbanks, plateaus, plains) which define 5 different production areas: Baja Montaña, Valdizarbe, Tierra Estella, Ribera Alta and Ribera Baja.
